About
The program examines Tulsa's role in the development of American stealth technology through the HIDE project, a North American Aviation effort launched in the early 1960s to reduce the detectability of the Hound Dog cruise missile. The discussion covers the project's later connections to stealth drones flown in Vietnam, stealth-related submarine technology, the B-1B bomber, radar-absorbing structures, radar cross-section design, analysis, and measurement. Craig Baucke, author of The HIDE Project, worked on the B-1B bomber and Tomahawk Cruise Missile at Rockwell North American Aircraft in Tulsa and later became GE Aerospace's first Consulting Engineer for Radar Cross Section. Robert D. (Bob) Strattan, Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tulsa, served as an engineering supervisor on the HIDE project and later as its scientific advisor. Allen R. (Al) Williams, a former Director of Engineering for Spirit AeroSystems in Tulsa, supported radar-absorbing systems for the B-1B and other aerospace programs. Richard Moore, PE, managed the HIDE group in Tulsa and worked on radar-absorbent structures, antennas, radar-absorbing materials, and low-observable design for Navy, Air Force, NASA, and FAA programs.
