About

Rocks are the foundation of geomaterials that underpin modern society, from cement in the built environment to critical minerals used in smartphones and energy technologies. The seminar examines how resource efficiency can create more value from materials already extracted rather than relying solely on additional extraction. The discussion covers three approaches: retaining more usable material through feedstock redesign, extracting multiple values through water–rock interactions, and using smart sensing to identify valuable properties in heterogeneous rock resources. Specific applications include lower-temperature cement processing and decarbonization, increased material yield and retention, mobilization of valuable elements through water interacting with rock under thermal and chemical gradients, and targeted extraction based on smart sensing. Speaker: Tiziana Vanorio, professor of Geophysics in Stanford University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, with a courtesy appointment in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Her research includes geothermal systems, CO₂ mineralization, critical minerals, and new cementitious materials inspired by natural mineral transformation and cementation.
